Here’s what we discussed:

Data practitioners operate in an increasingly complex world of data. They need data for analytics and data science–and they want to democratize data, providing self-service access for their data consumers.

They’re facing multiple challenges, including:

  • Brittle and complex data pipelines
  • Queries that fail and data consumers who aren’t able to access data they need
  • Keeping up with a continuously changing technology landscape and feeling like they’ll never be able to catch up

In this roundtable, we discussed data practitioners’ biggest pain points and how to address them with a data lakehouse.

Here is what we learned:

Karan Nisar, American Family Insurance, Director, Data Engineering

• Karan joined the call to learn what other engineers are doing with SQL lakehouses and what sort of problems others are having with them.
• Once you create the report, the analysts don’t know how to attribute the information. He is looking for a front-user multi-user catalog solution.
• Is there a way to limit the dashboard caching, so people can have access to it? Karan is running into caching problems with Google.

Srikanth Penumutchu, GlobalFoundries, Lead Data Business Intelligence

• Srikanth asked how easily analysts could find the SQLs in Dremio.
• Srikanth wanted to know more about how Dremio can help a company manage and optimize its data better.
• Srikanth wanted to know if Dremio has future plans with the Apache Arrow format because he likes how Apache formats the data.
• Srikanth asked if Dremio can be used if you have multiple data use-cases.
