Theme: What’s the Big Deal about Data Observability? Data Observability Drives Actionable Business Growth

Presented by

Acceldata

Here’s what we discussed:

For years, enterprises have run mission-critical data systems with outdated tools that weren’t designed to manage the current exploding supply of data. The problem is only getting worse as massive data volumes, data pipeline complexity, new technologies and hybrid environments conspire to challenge the business value of data systems.

This affects everyone in an organization – data teams struggle with operational issues and often fail to meet the increasing demand for real-time data insights, data consumers don’t trust the data they need to make key business decisions, and executives can’t ensure data delivery and pipeline performance meet business requirements.

In this session we focused on how, when and where enterprises can apply data observability to:

  • Get comprehensive visibility across all data in the enterprise
  • Quickly identify data ‘blind spots’
  • Certify data sets to increase user confidence in data
  • Ensure your data teams are the ‘the first to know and the first to fix’
  • Move from ‘fire fighting’ to ‘prevention and prediction’

Here is what we learned:

Vipin Chauhan, Chief Architect & Global Lead – Data Analytics on Cloud (TCS BFSI CDO Strategic Initiative Group), Tata Consulting Services

Tata assists banking and financial services clients migrate to the cloud.

A chief data officer’s role in financial services may have different responsibilities than someone in that role in other industries. It can range from simply being in charge of governance, but it also can encompass running entire platforms. In some cases that person is paired with an analytics officer.

Chauhan feels the terminology around multi-cloud is vague because sometimes there are multiple nodes operating that are unconnected. The concept is best thought about in terms of integration where data can be shared in a seamless manner. Those exchanges are costly and are affected by other considerations within a business.

Mayank Yadav, Head Data Curation, Vice President, Swiss Re

Yadav handles curation for the insurance firm ranging from manual OCR to data science. The company also is building a unified data lake using an ADM dialectics model unified data lake for the company, which is called as ADM dialectics data model.

Yadav also runs a data education program, because as an old and very traditional company their employees are not very tech savvy.

Literacy and democratization are important, but when considering access to data, the question is whether it is assembled in a way to solve problems, or is it simply an aggregation of information.

When it comes to reliability issues, Yadav sees it as both a problem of quality of data and the effectiveness of software.
