Here’s what we discussed:

Data warehousing architectures and pricing models over the decades have been designed to lock you into the vendor. Organizations have had to depend on their data warehousing vendors not just for storing their data, but have also paid enormous amounts of money to retrieve their own data!

An open lakehouse platform is built on open-source software and open standards and does not force your organization to be locked into one vendor or another!

We discussed, how an open lakehouse platform frees your data and your organization from proprietary data warehouse vendors by:
  • Treating data as an independent tier – free from any single vendor
  • Allowing you to keep your data in your inexpensive cloud storage, without the need to create unnecessary data copies
  • Meeting all your business analytic requirements without vendor lock-in

The open lakehouse platform – with the open data formats and open standards – increases flexibility to choose best-of-breed analytics technologies, tools and engines for your business needs, improves time-to-insights and simplifies data governance and security.

Here is what we learned:

This is so powerful: NO single vendor controls or owns your data!
  • One of our participants joined the session because cost is very much scrutinized, and the vendors keep pushing for more money.
  • Their data set is much smaller than others on the call. They used to have data marts, but they are on a journey to move their data over to Snowflake.
  • They have day-to-day reports that just need a base table, and they have a data warehouse for all their other data. Now the challenge is to distribute this data securely to its partners, and they are struggling with that.
  • They are struggling to expose this data with Power PI and to create a security layer around this. They want their customers to be able to pick and choose their own columns and formatting.
  • His team seems to be moving to Snowflake. But it’s hard to leave all your investments.
