The use of Excel spreadsheets is still common among planners. While AI-powered demand planning tools that produce predictive and prescriptive insights can help upgrade demand planning capabilities, manual planning is still a valuable backup during uncertain times.
COVID-19 threw the supply chain into disarray. The pandemic brought out 3 types customer streams: pantry-loaders, real demand, and artificial demand. Demand for certain products was through the roof, and suppliers said their existing systems were not strong enough to prepare for that demand.
When the COVID-19 shutdown began, some suppliers stopped production and ran down inventory with what we had. Instead of forecasting, they were upfront with customers about what they were able to produce going forward. They managed supply based on historical trends and tried to keep customers in line with what was fair.
