Here’s what we discussed:

Personalization in ecommerce isn’t a new, revolutionary idea, so why are most businesses still not getting it right? To power even the simplest of product recommendation engines effectively, machine learning models are needed, and they require clean, high-quality data in an expected format. And the latter is not easy to come by. The reality for most data teams is having to make do with the data that is available as exhaust from other systems, rather than data created for their unique business’s purpose.

Our participants joined this roundtable to discuss:
  • The increasing importance of personalization in e-commerce
  • Different types of personalization
  • The role of machine learning in driving personalization
  • The challenges in delivering this data
  • The difference between exhaust data and data creation
  • Personalization opportunities with the right data

Here is what we learned:

Sandeep Mishra, Director Business Intelligence, Leslie’s Poolmart, Inc.

• Sandeep joined the session because they are going from on-prem to the cloud, have a mobile app, and have growing ecommerce transaction volume. He wants to know how to use that data and analytics to grow the business.
• Some level of personalization doesn’t bother customers. But you don’t know how much it bothers them. So what level do we stop? There’s a thin line and we need to figure it out. For retail it’s probably fine because you’re browsing an item. But maybe not for a mortgage when you’re bombarded with calls.
• But once a customer gives permission, how do you ensure that marketer doesn’t sell your data?
• They are not currently doing personalization.

• When a customer accepts terms and conditions in an app, their data is then stored. With cookies, there is not that option.
• They don’t collect data, but aggregate level information about how their systems were used. They are considering it in the future.
