How Ambitious Insurers Meet the Expectation of Mergers and Acquisitions
Networking and Dinner at The Peninsula Paris

Here’s what we discussed:

After a few sluggish years thanks to the pandemic, across Europe there is a palatable resurgence of M&A within the Life Insurance business as a strategic tool to accelerate and diversity capabilities, evolve distribution, build scale to support ambitious growth agendas, and prepare business models for the future.

For example, we’ve seen the German insurer HDI acquire insurtech Community Life to accelerate its digital capabilities for direct-to-consumer and sales partners as well as innovative capabilities such as biometric insurance. And recently, the Italian insurance group Generali agreed to acquire Crédit Agricole Assurances’ medical insurance company La Médicale for €435mn to strengthen their presence in France and enable them to grow their health and protection lines and P&C business.

EIS - How Ambitious Insurers Meet the Expectation of Mergers and Acquisitions

But this business strategy doesn’t come without its own trials and tribulations. Integrating the people, processes and technologies to ensure that the maximum value is delivered from those engagements is leaving many insurers struggling. Legacy systems and core technologies, along with many processes, were never designed to enable the adaptability or control required to assimilate often more digitally advanced insurtechs or organisations. Leaving insurers with as much of a problem and an opportunity:

  • Customer or human Centricity – how do you put the customer at the heart of your products to maximise their exposure to a full integrated suite and increase the interest in life insurance by both your existing, acquired, or new customers?
  • Digital Transformations – how do you invest in the right technology and the right approach that seamlessly enables you to consolidate organisations into your existing business while not breaking things as you go?
