Here’s what we discussed:

While the COVID-19 pandemic is challenging for all organizations, companies with a large “deskless workforce” have had the especially daunting task of keeping their employees safe while keeping their businesses open.

How have clocking processes changed? Do schedules consider vaccination status? How have unions responded? Contact tracing and health attestations – an enormous responsibility – you’ll learn some best practices!

Advances in technology have allowed software solutions to perform many of these functions in a HIPAA-compliant manner while also facilitating documentation and recordkeeping.

In this session, we brought these issues out in the open for a frank discussion among HR and Operations leaders.

We covered these points:

  • Best practices for contact tracing and health attestation
  • Creative solutions for social distancing on plant floors
  • Employee rights to privacy
  • Employee rights to a safe work environment

Here is what we learned:

Bob Gerlach, Director, Health & Safety at UPS, UPS

• UPS still has a large flex work environment.
• Bob joined the call to figure out how to balance having an at-home workforce, since 19 of UPS’s offices have gone full return-to-work.
• Social distancing has been encouraged whenever possible. So was masking. But in some places, it was not possible.
• For transportation, workers were by themselves unless they were interacting to a customer. They had to limit interaction with others to a minimum.
• From a standpoint, everyone has been good about masking and PPEs. The importance of disinfecting common areas and good personal hygiene was prevalent at some locations, but not at others. When cases spiked, operations there became reinvigorated.
• When they decided to do return-to-work, vaccines were required by October 1. Masking was also required.
• UPS created a pandemic panel as a system of record for reporting COVID cases.
• Additionally, they built a pre-work health-check app, and are building a vaccination-check app.
